IT issues to consider when applying for funding

As each grant or funding application is unique, any advice on IT purchases needs to be dealt with on a one to one basis.  If your project, grant or award has a computing, IT or web element to it, then it is imperative that you talk to the IT Manager during the early stages.

We can provide advice, quotes and point you in the right direction with a range of information specific to your requirements.

Please contact ICT Manager - Jeremy Worth (jeremy.worth@arch.ox.ac.uk) in the first instance.

Things to Consider!

  • Do you require desktop or laptop computers?
  • Have you considered data backup and retension options?
  • Have you sourced quotes for the equipment you need?
  • Do you need external storage, USB sticks or hard drives?
  • Is there a project website?
  • Have you costed the website design and liasie with IT Services or another website designer?
  • Is there a database and what will it do and who will design, support and maintain it?
  • What happens to the website or data when the grant ends?
  • How and where will you store any data?
  • How much data is there - 1GB or 20TB?  Who will need access and how will they get this?
  • Do you have any mapping or GIS requirements?
  • Do you need specialist or specific software or systems designing?  Who will do this and at what cost?
  • Will there be any other equipnment requiremetns or purchases?
  • Software costs money!  Have you factored that in?

These are just some questions you should be thinking about.  It is therefore imperative that you talk to the IT Manager very early on in the process and get the necessary information you need!

Some Cost Ideas

All equipment costs should be discussed with the IT Manager.  Quotes can be arranged and specific requiremetns will vary depending on usage and the software needed.  Please also note that not all funders will provide money for equipment purchases.  If this is the case, it is important that the department knows your plans well in advance.
